The Weekend & Halloween

I haven’t looked forward to a weekend like this in a while. here’s 5 reasons

1) It’s Halloween tonight and I get to hand out candy to kids and not get looked at like I am some kind of creep

2) My brother-in-law is coming down for a visit (always entertaining see HERE & HERE for more details on that).

3) I’m going to a leafs game with 3 of my good friends.

4) The set list for Sunday is SWEEEET!!

5) It’s one week closer to getting tony romo back and getting rid of Brad “i can only throw 10 yards” Johnson

So on that note…have a great weekend!

On the Menu

Tonight we had Shepherd’s Pie for dinner. I love it. I was curious to see it’s origins and since Wikipedia is the engine that validates curiousity birthed in people like me, I began my search. Did you know that Shepherds Pie’s street name is “Cottage Pie.” I would NEVER eat it if that was the going name. Part of what I love about it is the fact that its a rugged meal…so much so that Shepherd’s took the credit for naming it. That said, I am married to a beautiful woman that is just as good at cooking as she is at looking. I ate all my food so I get dessert.

P.S. When taking this picture via PhotoBooth, I spilled corn all over my keyboard…my cat licked it off.

ProPresenter

This Sunday we officially launched ProPresenter and waved goodbye to EZ Worship forever. Everyone I know is already using it or is on their way to using it. It went off without a hitch. I love when technology doesn’t let you down…but alas, so often it does

Weekend Review

This week was a good service. With the variable of introducing ProPresnter, I am happy with the way everything unfolded.

On another note. This Sunday we mixed up the service order and started with 1 song, then announcements and then the major worship package. I always find that this is a nice break from the typical Sunday for 2 main reasons…

1) It keeps people guessing and breaks routine. I find when you do something “out of the ordinary” like changing the usual order…showing a video, etc. it helps to add a new dimension and depth to the service.

2) We (as I’ve mentioned before) have a HUGE problem with latecomers. What hapen most Sundays is people come in during the announcements and they miss the meat of the worship time. Changing it up gives them a taste of what they’re missing, and if they came late today, they missed announcements and offering…hopefully inspiring them to show up early next week.

We began our series entitled “Dear Church – 7 Letters to 7 Churches” out of the book of Revelation.

All that said, here’s how everything went down.

Worship Auditions

When I saw this video I laughed until I cried.

Not exactly the typical worship team prospect.

Following Instructions…

One of my biggest pet-peeves is the whole “Follow the Instructions” process. Here’s why. I am working on an assignment for one of the classes I’m doing for my MBA. The instructions for this specific assignment are the WORST that I have had in my 6+ years of post-secondary education. This is an example of an instructor that cannot clearly explain what they want (see example one). But then there’s the other side…when the instructions are VERY clear…but still students can’t catch on (see example two).

1) The instructions are no where to be found…yet referenced regularly. Without a word of a lie…the assignment I just wrote said in it, “make sure to adhere to the length requirements and source requirements stated.” This is very unnerving…

Why? Because NO WHERE are there any requirements listed. So it makes me (the person trying to follow the instructions) frustrated because I feel like I’m missing somethingk

2) The instructions are crystal clear..but they for whatever reason people STILL fall off the instruction bandwagon and plummet to their instructional death. Here’s an example of what I am living with. When the instructions say “2 pages single spaced” these people write 1 page double spaced (essentially half the length required). I often wonder if they just don’t like getting good marks…

So why do I say all this? Why do I write a post on this stuff? Very simple. This principle translates into EVREYTHING. How well do you follow instructions? Do you listen to what is being asked of you? On the flip-side, do you clearly explain what you want?

Whether it’s in ministry and explaining what you want to your band or ministry team or at work and commuicating with your co-workers or maybe your spouse or kids…

To People Communicating…
- Communicate expectations
- Make sure your understood
- Follow up for accountability

To People Being Communicated Too…
- Listen
- Ask Questions
- Follow Instructions

Rant over.

New Series

This Sunday we start our new series;

“Dear Church – 7 Letters to 7 Churches” taken from the book of Revelation. I am really excited! It’s rare that churches do a series in Revelation, and I think that by seeing the different churches and how they behaved we will see the “do’s and do not’s” of being a Christ-centered passionate church.
